Schulmann et al. (2014) proposed that the Bohemian Massif resulted from prolonged Devonian oceanic, and eventually continental, subduction of the Saxo-Thuringian lithospheric plate beneath the TepláBarrandian/Moldanubian arc/back arc in front of the Bruno-Vistulian continental block (Brunia), culminating in Devonian ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) metamorphism. Subsequent mass transfer from the lower plate into the upper plate is seen as the cause for the vast volumes of early Carboniferous HP/HT-granulites within the Bohemian Massif.
