Epulopiscium sp. type B is an enormous intestinal symbiont of the surgeonfishNaso tonganus . Intracellular offspring production inEpulopiscium shares features with endospore formation. Here, we characterize thespoIIE homolog inEpulopiscium . The timing ofspoIIE gene expression and presence of interacting partners suggest that the activation of σF occurs early inEpulopiscium offspring development.
