We demonstrate that growth ofCronobacter sakazakii in the presence of acetate as a carbon source promotes loss of RpoS, with a consequent reduction in stress tolerance. This suggests thatC. sakazakii is capable of regulating cell fitness through mutation of therpoS gene.
