The bactericidal activity of amoxicillin was investigated againstEnterococcus faecalis JH2-2 and against an isogenic mutant deficient in the production of theN -acetylglucosaminidase AtlA. Comparison of the two strains indicated that this autolysin contributes to killing by amoxicillin both in vitro and in a rabbit model of experimental endocarditis.
