The intracellular water volume (IWC) and internal pH of dormant spores and vegetative mycelium of Streptomyces antibioticus were determined. By using tritiated water and a 14 C‐labelled membrane‐impermeable solute, inuline, the IWV values of vegetative mycelium were found to be 2‐fold those of the dormant spores. Internal pH of the spores and vegetative mycelium was slightly acidic, being lower than that of the dormant spores. The internal pH of the spores was more affected by changes in the external pH than that of the vegetative mycelium, indicating a lower buffering capability.
