A 16S rRNA gene (rDNA) of Kineococcus aurantiacus was amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) from bacterial cells and subjected to direct sequencing by the Sanger dideoxynucleotide chain termination method. The primary structure was compared with those of 32 representative actinomycetes and related organisms. The phylogenetic analysis indicated that K. aurantiacus is a member of the actinobacteria, but it shows no close relationship to any member of the order Actinomycetales, for which 16S rRNA sequences are available. Thus, this genus seems to be unique and forms a novel line of descent among the previously described Gram‐positive cocci and rods.
