Summary The partial 16S rRNA sequences of three unknown yellow‐pigmented enterococci originating from plants were determined using reverse transcriptase. Comparative analysis of the sequence data with those from all known enterococcal species reveal the plant isolates represent a hitherto unknown species of the genus Enterococcus , from which the name E. sulfureus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is NCDO 2379.
