Summary Macrorestriction analysis of 15 different species or pathovars of plant pathogenic pseudomonads was performed using pulsed field gel electrophoresis. In general, different fingerprints were obtained for all strains analyzed. However, nearly identical fragment patterns were found for some strains that originated either from the same source or from P. syringae pathovars that were characterized by a narrow host specifity. The pathovars phaseolicola and syringae of P. syringae differed from each other in the degree of relatedness of the fingerprints analyzed, suggesting differences in the genetic variation in the two pathovars.
