Aerobic, Gram‐negative methanol‐utilizing bacteria that do not utilize methane are divided into 11 taxa. Two taxa are obligatedor restricted facultative methanol utilizers and nine taxa are facultative methanol utilizers. The phylogenetic relationship within the methanol utilizers is discussed on the basis of 16 S and 5 S ribosomal RNA sequences.
