The behaviour, functions and biosynthesis of c ‐type cytochromes of the bacterial periplasm are reviewed. Particular emphasis is placed on cytochromes involved in (i) the metabolism of C 1 compounds and (ii) the electron transport reactions of Paracoccus denitrificans .
