Chemical and molecular taxonomic studies were performed on a representative strain of some lactic acid bacteria of unkown taxonomic position isolated from salmonid fish. The results demonstrate that the fish bacterium represents a new species of the genus Lactococcus for which the name Lactococcus piscium sp.nov. is proposed. The type strain of Lactococcus piscium is NCFB 2778.
