An unknown highly basic polyamine peak was observed in Thermus thermophilus and it was identified to be a pentaamine [NH 2 (CH 2 ) 3 NH (CH 2 ) 3 NH(CH 2 ) 4 NH(CH 2 )NH 2 ] by gas chromotography‐mass spectrometry and named as thermopentamine. The new pentaamine coexisted with another isomer, homocaldopentamine, at a molar ratio of 1:1, as a major polyamine of the organism. This is the first report to show the occurrence of thermopentamine in nature.
