A 6.1 kilobase DNA fragment has been cloned from Pseudomonas stutzeri AN11, a naphthalene‐ degrading marine isolate. The cloned DNA constitutively expressed salicylate hydroxylase and catechol‐2,3‐dioxygenase activities in E. coli , both activities being slightly induced by salicylate. The structural genes have been located in the cloned fragment, which hybridized both with the chromosomal DNA and with a 60 kilobase plasmid of P. stutzeri AN11, and showed homology with the corresponding regions of TOL and NAH plasmids.
