Rhizobium leguminosarum IARI 102 produced 2,3‐dihydroxy benzoic acid, a type of phenolate siderophore, under iron‐starved conditions. Hydroxamic acids were not detected. Maximum production of siderophore was found at 26 h of growth in a chemically defined medium at 28°C with shaking. Threonine was detected as the amino acid conjugate of the siderophore. Addition of Fe 3+ to the culture medium increased the growth yield significantly, but depressed the production of the iron chelating compound.
