A simple and efficient system is described for the transformation of Bordetella species with a plasmid of the P incompatibility group. The parameters tested to obtain the highest frequency of transformation were strain, initial field strength, number of pulses and DNA and cell concentration. The most important variable was found to be the initial field strength and at 25 kV/cm transformants could be obtained at a frequency of > 10 6 /μg.
