Mycobacterium vaccae and BCG showed activation (at the level of C3) of the alternative pathway of the human complement system as seen by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Antimycobacterial antibodies were found to have enhancing effect on C3 uptake by these mycobacteria. The homologous antibodies showed more enhancing effect in comparison to heterologous antibodies.
