A rapid procedure is described for the identification of peptide toxins from Microcystis sp. strains. The amphiphilic toxins were isolated by (1) water extraction of dried cells, (2) adsorption onto reversed‐phase C 18 cartridges and differential elution, and (3) high‐performance liquid chromatography. The method is suitable for quantification and might substitute for the mouse bioassay.
