The bioenergetic properties of a facultatively anaerobic alkalophile which contained no cytochrome component in the respiratory chain were studied. It is suggested that the bacterium is able to acidify the cytoplasm even in the absence of Na + due to a Donnan potential, which results in the dissipation of the membrane potential.
