By screening a λ gt 11 library of Bordetella pertussis DNA with a Rhizobium meliloti tRNA leu (CAG) gene as a probe we cloned a B. pertussis tRNA leu (CAG) gene. Comparison of sequence homologies between equivalent genes from different organisms reveals an evolutionary diversity of B. pertussis from other Gram‐negative and Gram‐positive bacteria.
