The release of colicin A and the accompanying lysis were examined in autolytic deficient Escherichia coli mutants. Following induction of the colicin A operon with mytomycin C in cells containing the colicinogenic plasmid pColA9, the mutants lysed and released colicin A in the same manner as did the wild type strain. The results suggest that cellular lysis mediated by the colicin lysis gene does not occur by activation of the cellular autolytic system.
