A review of salt‐dependent changes in membrane lipid composition of halotolerant, moderately halophilic, and extremely halophilic bacteria is presented. The biosynthetic and regulatory mechanisms underlying the observed changes are discussed. Possible implications for the evolution of extreme halophiles and other Archaebacteria are also discussed.
