Activity of the key enzyme for tetrapyrrole biosynthesis, 5‐aminolevulinic acid synthase, was inhibited upon irradiation of cell‐free extracts from Rhodopseudomonas sphaeroides . maximum inactivation was observed after irradiation with light of 422, 522 and 552–556 nm. The relevance of this effect in the control of bacteriochlorophyll synthesis is discussed.
