Gemmata obscuriglobus UQM2246 was investigated by the 16S ribosomal RNA cataloguing approach in order to determine its phylogenetic position. This budding organism is a member of the order Planctomycetales, displaying a remote and equidistant relationship to representatives of the genera Planctomyces and Pirella . Like the other members of this order, G. obscuriglobus lacks peptidoglycan, possessing a proteinaceous cell wall instead.
