A new alcohol identified as 1‐tetradecanol by gas‐liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC‐MS) was found in representative strains of Mycobacterium aurum, Mycobacterium chubuense, Mycobacterium gilvum, Mycobacterium obuense, Mycobacterium parafortuitum , and Mycobacterium vaccae . Studies on M. obuense indicated that this alcohol is a constituent of the cell wall but not of the ‘wax‐ester’ mycolates. This compound was not detected in other mycobacteria examined.
