We determined the nucleotide sequence of a DNA fragment of the F plasmid containing the srnB gene responsible for promotion of stable RNA degradation in Escherichia coli . From the DNA sequence, a possible initiation codon (ATG) was preceded by a possible promoter about 100 bp upstream, and by a Shine‐Dalgarno sequence (GAGG) with proper spacing. The ATG was followed by the sequence of a putative polypeptide product and likely translation and transcription termination signals. A possible base‐paired stem and loop was detected between the promoter and the initiation codon. This region may participate in the regulation of srnB expression.
