Periplasmic‐leaky mutants of Escherichia coli K‐12 carrying a lkyB mutation had a reduced content of outer membrane proteins OmpF and LamB. The effect of the lkyB 207 mutation on the expression of ompF, ompC or lamB genes was analysed in strains carrying a ompF‐lacZ, ompC‐lacZ or lamB‐lacZ operon or gene fusion. It was shown that the lkyB 207 mutation exerted a 1.5‐ to 2‐fold effect on the transcription of ompF‐lacZ and ompC‐lacZ operon fusions, as well as on the expression of lamB‐lacZ gene fusions. The results suggested that the lkyB gene product exerted a positive control on LamB and OmpF protein levels but a negative control on the OmpC protein level.
