A filter mating procedure has been used to transfer the plasmid pAMβ;1 from Streptococcus lactis to Clostridium acetobutylicum at high efficiency. Once established in this latter host the plasmid can be transferred, with lower efficiency to other strains of C. acetobutylicum or back to S. lactis . A procedure has also been developed for the co‐cultivation of Bacillus subtilis and C. acetobutylicum and the transfer of pAMβ;1 between these organisms has been demonstrated.
