When Chlamydia trachomatis serotype E was grown in monolayers of replicating McCoy cells, dividing inclusions were seen by indirect immunofluorescence. Transmission of inclusions occurred within the McCoy cell population, so that clusters of inclusions in adjacent cells had formed by 72 h. Inclusion division and transmission may provide an important mechanism for persistence of naturally occurring chlamydial infections.
