An extracellular 5′‐nucleotidase produced by a moderate halophile, Micrococcus varians subsp. halophilus was partially purified from the culture filtrate by ethanol precipitation and Sepharose 4B hydrophobic chromatography. The 5′‐nucleotidase was a novel halophilic enzyme, requiring 2 M NaCl or 2.5 M KCl and 0.1 mM Co 2+ or 0.1 mM Mn 2+ for maximal activity.
