The effects in vitro of chloramphenicol on the mitochondrial electron transport of Neurospora crassa were investigated under phosphorylating, non‐phosphorylating and uncoupled conditions. The antibiotic acted at more than one site of the respiratory chain: exogenous NADH dehydrogenase, Complex I, the rotenone‐resistant by‐pass and the alternative oxidase, although an unspecific effect could not be totally excluded.
