Anaerobically and aerobically grown cultures of Propionibacterium acnes have been used to demonstrate the presence of respiration, respiration‐driven proton translocation and stimulation of membrane potential formation by O 2 in such cultures. The results obtained indicate that P. acnes has the capacity to carry out oxidative phosphorylation.
