Prescription drug monitoring programs (PDMPs) have been rightly hailed as playing an important role in efforts to deter prescription drug abuse but to date, have varied greatly from state to state. Historically, some PDMPs have raised concerns about their effectiveness and their potential negative impact on access to appropriate care [1]. Increasingly, these programs have evolved into a useful tool for the clinician who must incorporate careful risk management into the prescribing of opioid analgesics or any other controlled substance.
