As I read through this year's Abstracts for Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Pain Medicine (AAPM) Scientific Poster Session, their topical breadth and quality caused me to reflect on the progression of our scholarship in the Academy and in the Journal. Eleven years ago, we initiated a formal Scientific Poster Session for AAPM's Annual Meeting. For several years, first as Editor of the Clinical Journal of Pain and then as Editor of our new journal, Pain Medicine , I perused the poster sessions of the American Pain Society (APS) and International Association of the Study of Pain (IASP) meetings to identify and solicit authors willing to publish in our new journal, even before we were indexed in PUB MED. Of course, I am indebted to my colleagues on the Editorial Board and to all the unsolicited authors who contributed their manuscripts for publication in a new quarterly journal; but more than any other activity, our encouragement of poster presenters fostered the …
