In the last decade, astronomers have become used to modest growth in the UK research budget, albeit on a smaller scale than other areas of science. At first sight, this was set to continue when the government announced the 2008–2011 allocation for the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) as part of the Comprehensive Spending Review.
