Stars in each of three clusters within the Milky Way have distinct chemical signatures, according to ESO researchers using Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph (UVES) on the VLT. The high level of homogeneity shown by the cluster stars suggests “chemical tagging” can be used to link stars to their common formation sites and hence unravel the history of the galaxy.
