SUMMARY Schettino and Turco recently proposed a revised model for the continental closure of Pangaea and the early opening history of the Central Atlantic Ocean based on a quantitative method, in combination with a range of geological and geophysical data. Their discussion and final results do not properly consider field data, and moreover, their analyses violate certain plate kinematic principles. The comments we offer concern in particular the estimated independent motion of the Moroccan block.
