SUMMARY The computation of the transmission and reflection coefficients is an important step in the construction of synthetic seismograms for 2‐D or 3‐D media, if the modal summation technique is used. These coupling coefficients for Love waves at a vertical discontinuity are computed analytically. Numerical tests for realistic structures show how the energy carried by an incoming mode is redistributed on the various modes existing on both sides of the vertical interface.
