SUMMARY A set of global Proudman functions, computed on a 2° finite‐difference grid, is used to smooth raw tidal estimates previously derived by Cartwright and Ray from a two‐year analysis of Geosat altimeter data. The least‐squares problem provides an interesting application of ridge regression and Hansen's L‐curve analysis. The final smoothed maps are found to agree more closely to a set of 80‘ground‐truth’constants than did the original tidal models.
