SUMMARY A new 3‐D inversion algorithm for the interpretation of magnetic total field anomalies is presented. Using Bayes' theorem the algorithm allows the inclusion of a priori information of model parameters and to treat this information as well as the measured data in a probabilistic manner. In this way a rather fast and stable method is obtained. The models consist of a system of vertical rectangular prisms with its top, base, susceptibility and remanent magnetization intensity and direction as variable parameters. Several synthetic examples show the possibilities that the algorithm offers. Finally the interpretation of an anomaly measured in NE Spain is presented, which shows a strong remanent magnetization component oblique to the local geomagnetic field.
