SUMMARY The similitude equation for electromagnetic induction represents an exact integral relationship between the conductivity model and field measurements, and has been suggested as a basis for the inversion of magnetotelluric data. In this note, inversion of the similitude equation is compared to linearized inversion and found to be inadequate in that it implicitly neglects first‐order terms.
