Summary Archaeomagnetic directions in two hearths at Coffee Yard, York, have provided evidence for their age and mode of use. the earliest structure was last fired in approximately 1440 AD and the second about 90 years later. the depth of remagnetization (>16.cm) has been simulated using a simple analytical model which suggests that one hearth was fired continuously for at least 56 h.
