SUMMARY The application of the Gaussian beam method to the modelling of refraction data from the Swabian Jura (SW Germany) demonstrates the superiority of the Gaussian beam method as compared to the ray method. The modelling of a low quality factor ( Q = 100) in the middle‐crust results in extreme discrepancies to the recorded data whereas a Q ‐value of 600 or bigger is consistent with the data.
