Summary Palaeomagnetic directions in 84 samples of Swedish varved clay were found to be closely related to the slope of deposition. Existing models for the ‘bedding error’ which permit grain rotation only about horizontal axes fail to account for the sequence of remanence inclinations. A revised model which invokes post‐depositional rotation about axes normal to the bed is in good agreement with the observations and predicts an increase in remanence ‘noise’ for sediments formed on tilted surfaces under certain conditions.
