Summary Recent developments in the analysis of extreme sea‐levels using the joint density function of surges and tides has generated interest in statistical modelling of the distributions of tidal elevations as encountered in British coastal waters. In this paper some relatively simple stochastic models are proposed and their suitability examined and compared using tidal heights determined for Newlyn and Portsmouth. Particular attention has been paid to the computational procedures involved in order to illustrate the theoretical and practical difficulties which may be encountered.
