Summary. We show that the work of O'Doherty & Anstey can be used to deduce the apparent attenuation of acoustic waves in randomly layered media : Here A (ω, x ) is the amplitude spectrum of the initial pulse of the transmitted wave at angular frequency after having propagated a distance x . The medium is characterized by its mean velocity, its mean impedance, and rms fluctuation ∂ 1 , and has layers of thickness h . This formula is valid for wavelengths longer than one layer thickness.
