Summary. It is now possible to obtain high quality records of geomagnetic secular variations in the direction (though not the magnitude) of the ancient field. Type‐curves are presented for four regions, namely North America, West Europe, Argentina and Australia constructed, by fitting cubic splines to data stacked from numbers of cores of post‐glacial sediments. Ways in which the results can be used to investigate the grosser properties of the ancient field are discussed.
