Summary A simple two‐layered hydrodynamical model is formulated and applied to determine density currents in the Norwegian trench. It is demonstrated that the resulting flow through the trench is likely to make a significant contribution to the Norwegian Coastal Current of which a major fluctuating part is due to meteorological forces.
