Summary The magnetic domain structure of the Rossville and York Haventype Mesozoic diabases in Pennsylvania was investigated through the use of the demagnetization characteristics tests of NRM, ARM and saturation IRM. The Rossville‐type diabase has a multidomained primary magnetic structure; the York Haven‐type diabase is primarily single domained resulting from exsolution lamellae banding due to an abundance of Ti. Thus these diabase types are different magnetically as well as chemically and petrologically. A further examination of the demagnetization characteristics has revealed inconsistencies in the indicated multidomained structure of the Rossvilletype diabase. Four lines of evidence are presented that suggest that the Rossville domain structure, though not single domained, does not show truly multidomained remanence properties and may be displaying characteristics of a predominantly pseudo single domained material.
