Summary Sources of low degree gravity harmonics ( n ≤ 11) or of approximately 15°× 15° mean global gravity anomalies, now welldetermined from satellite observations, lie in the top third of the mantle provided it is assumed that they are produced by random density distributions. Higher degree gravity harmonics, though not yet accurately determined, seem to derive from mass variations in the upper mantle. Non‐hydrostatic part of the second degree gravity harmonic requires separate interpretation.
