Summary Observations suggest that the mid‐latitude protonosphere is depleted during a magnetic storm. In this paper the day‐to‐day recovery of the mid‐latitude protonosphere is examined using solutions of the coupled equations of continuity and momentum for O + and H + The effect on the ionosphere and the influence of neutral air winds and temperature gradients are discussed. The results presented are for sunspot minimum conditions at equinox.
